On some rooted devices you can install ALSA drivers that give you hardware level control of USB audio devices, some devices use tinyALSA to do the same. If the Apple dongle does what the Dragonfly does then it sets its internal hardware level below 100% during the USB handshake process meaning that you don't get the full output that it is capable of even when setting the Android volume to 100%. Unless you use an app such as UAPP Android does not give you direct hardware level control of USB audio devices most audio devices seem to set their own internal volume level at 100% during the handshake process and just leave the volume control in Android to work through software (or volume pot) rather than directly control the USB hardware. If it's anything like other USB devices such as the Audioquest Dragonfly the issue is the way the dongle tells Android to handle the hardware volume levels during the USB handshake process.
